Abstract
The information utilization and resource needs of poison centers (PCs) were determined on a national level. Two hundred ninety PCs were surveyed, and 98 responded. A pretraining survey of resource utilization at the Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center was also included. Fifty hazardous substances were selected to examine the protocol of PC response. PCs were asked about frequency of use of NIOSH, OSHA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the local health department (HD) as resources. Eighty four percent communicated directly with the HD as opposed to 39 percent for NIOSH, 52 percent for OSHA, and 60 percent for the EPA. PCs also communicated more frequently with HDs than with any government agency. Usage of agency reference publications by PCs was as follows: 73 percent HD publications, 55 percent EPA publications, 56 percent OSHA publications, and 53 percent NIOSH publications. The most frequently used references were Poisindex, Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, and OSH-ROM NIOSHTIC database. Substances of occupational and environmental concern presented most frequently to the Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center and NIOSH were sulfuric-acid (7664939), freons (75456), formaldehyde (50000), and methylene-chloride (75092). These and 22 other chemicals were targeted for development of response protocols. Response protocols were to be composed of synonyms and identification numbers, human health effects, emergency response, occupational exposure and exposure limit guidelines, physicochemical properties, toxicity, treatment, monitoring, protective equipment, and handling and disposal guidelines. The authors conclude that developing response protocols will provide quick access to comprehensive and efficient information needed by poison information specialists attempting to answer environmental and occupational health questions.
