Abstract
A study was made of the children of Tochigi Prefecture, Japan with respect to their growth and strength when compared to children in other areas of the country. The total population of Tochigi Prefecture in 1975 was 1,690,000 with 108,789 of the households involved in farming as a family business. The average of urban school children in respect to height, weight, girth of chest, and sitting height was higher than those parameters measured in the children living in rural settings. Boys were taller in the urban schools at ages 8, 10, 13, and 14 years while urban girls were taller at age 7. The weights of the urban children were greater. For boys the girth of the chest was greater in the urban location at ages 8, 13, and 14 years while as for girls the girth of the chest at age 9 and 12 years was greater for the rural population. Vertical jumping and the power of the back muscles were higher in urban and suburban schools than in the mountain and farming villages in both males and females. The grasping power of the rural children exceeded that of the urban children, however. The authors note that these data are similar to the distribution of high and low corrected death rates for Tochigi Prefecture.
