Abstract
Dust explosion research and explosion hazard evaluation of combustible mixtures in Poland were reviewed. The historical development of dust explosion research in Poland was summarized. Basic research on dust explosions was discussed. The studies have focused on problems of ignition, explosibility limits, flame propagation and acceleration, deflagration, detonation, transition, and venting. In addition to laboratory testing the acceleration of flames in coal dust/air mixtures has been investigated in an experimental mine. These have shown that flame velocities can attain values on the order of hundreds of meter meters per second. The transition from deflagration to detonation has also been observed in the experimental mixtures. Evaluating explosion hazards in Poland was discussed. Up to recently dust explosion hazards have been assessed by measuring the minimum explosive concentration of a dust/air mixture; however, the use of parameters such as explosion pressure, rate of pressure rise, maximum rate of pressure increase, and minimum electrical energy required for ignition have been suggested. The author proposes a new parameter minimum hazardous mass (MHM) for assessing the explosive potential of dusts. The MHM defines the minimum volume of dust calculated for a specific volume of confinement that will cause a destructive pressure rise. The MHM combines the explosive properties of a dust with the ability of the confining volume (such as a building or installation) to resist the explosion.
