Abstract
An interview with Edward J. Baier, President of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and Deputy Director of NIOSH, was reported. Topics discussed included the expanded public relations and communications efforts of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, hospitals as occupational environments, the effect of the Walsh Healy Public Contracts Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act on the profession of industrial hygiene, differences and similarities between the professions of safety engineering and industrial hygiene, redesigning undergraduate programs to meet the changing needs of industrial hygienists, methods for the dissemination of information regarding industrial safety and hygiene, the shortage of board certified industrial hygienists, and the role of NIOSH in industrial safety and hygiene. The interrelationships between professionals involved in occupational safety and health and the need for business to recognize the contributions made by these professionals was emphasized.
