HHE determination report no. HHE-79-132-673, Lance Corporation, Hudson, Massachusetts.
NIOSH 1980 Mar; :1-17
A survey of the Lance Corporation (SIC-2869), Hudson, Massachusetts, was conducted at the request of management. The request alleged worker exposure to lead (7439921), methyl-ethyl-ketone-peroxide (1338234), and styrene (100425). Personal and area air samples were collected. Samples were also analyzed for acetone (67641), toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), and nuisance particulates. Five samples met or exceeded the NIOSH recommended standard of 0.10 milligrams lead per cubic meter (mg/m3). Seven of ten personal samples from the finishing department met or exceeded the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 0.05mg/m3. Lead concentrations in the buffing department were the highest. Four of seven personal samples were above the limit, and the average concentration of lead in air was 0.131mg/m3. Swipe samples in the cafeteria also contained high amounts of residual lead. Except for one sample of 0.12mg/m3 obtained in the tool room, lead concentrations in the other work areas were well below NIOSH and OSHA standards. The other components measured were well below NIOSH criteria. The authors conclude that a hazard of lead exposure exists in the finishing and buffing areas, with a potential hazard in the tool room. Recommendations concern improved local exhaust ventilation and personal hygiene.
