NIOSH 1977 Feb; :1-7
Atmospheric concentrations of several substances used in the manufacturing of office furniture at Utefab, Ltd., Fort Duchesne, Utah (SIC-2521) were surveyed in September, 1976. The company employs about 35 persons. Methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101), toluene (108883), aliphatic-naphtha and acetone (67641) were collected with activated charcoal organic vapor tubes. The sample collection rate was 50 cubic centimeters per minute. Total wood dust samples were collected on preweighed filters using a flow rate of 2 liters per minute. All organic solvent samples collected were well below OSHA standards. A total dust sample of 90 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) was collected in the sanding area. The recommended American Conference of Industrial Hygienists threshold limit value is 5mg/m3. The author concludes that there is a potential hazard of exposure to wood dust. He recommends that the sander be fitted with a respirator until engineering controls eliminate the health hazard. The paint storage room and the paint booths should be cleaned on a regular basis.
