Abstract
All ongoing research programs conducted with passive monitors (PM) under the auspices of NIOSH is reviewed. Advantages of PM are discussed. Monitors covered include the Gasbadge, the Organic Vapor Monitor, the MiniMonitor, the 3M Organic Vapor Monitor, and a personal atmospheric gas sampler monitor. The authors conclude that the present state of the art PM has some major drawbacks, including lack of specificity and detection limits at the low end of the scale. They also conclude that as some technologically advanced monitors are developed, passive monitoring will be useful in the ambient situation.
