The Needs for Future Respirator Research.
NIOSH 1980 Sep:67-78
Research needed to develop commercially available respirators acceptable to workers which will provide high levels of protection is discussed. Factors related to the physiological and psychological stresses experienced by wearers of respirators are identified. Research needs with respect to the effectiveness of respirators in workplaces and the improvement of respirator fit testing are discussed. Investigations of the effectiveness of positive air pressure respirators and facepieces are identified. Research needs in the areas of reliability of respirator performance during continued wearing, durability of reusable respirators, and the effects of shipment and storage of respirator air purifying elements are discussed. The need to develop special test procedures and performance criteria for self contained breathing apparatus is explained. Research related to air purifying respirators and to the scratching of respirator lenses used during abrasive blasting operations which should be conducted is described. The author recommends that NIOSH establish a respirator research laboratory with adequate equipment and staff to respond immediately whenever new problems arise concerning respiratory protection.
