Abstract
The toxic effects of cobalt (7440484) and the extent of occupational exposures are reviewed in a NIOSH criteria document. The health effects of cobalt exposure on workers in various industries are described, and the findings of various experimental studies on humans and animals are reviewed. The distribution and retention characteristics of cobalt exposure and its effect on reproduction are also discussed. The uses of cobalt and the occupations in which exposure to substances containing cobalt is possible are discussed. Methods for sampling and analysis of airborne cobalt are described. Engineering controls and work practices designed to control cobalt emissions into the workplace air are discussed, and a program for medical and environmental surveillance and worker training is described. The basis for occupational exposure standards is stated, and a list of foreign environmental limits is presented. The authors identify several specific areas in which additional research is required. The authors state that information on the health effects of cobalt is sufficient to conclude that occupational exposure to cobalt can be a health hazard.
