Abstract
Current and future needs for analytical laboratory methods designed to determine compliance with Federal standards are examined. Sampling and analytical requirements stemming from the promulgation of standards for contaminants in the workplace are described. OSHA and NIOSH efforts to meet measurement demands are highlighted. Future projects for monitoring more than 12,000 different toxic chemicals are discussed along with related field instrument design. Special problems associated with the measurement of carcinogens and pathogens are also addressed.
