Abstract
Worker exposure to ethylene-oxide (75218) was investigated at the BASF Wyandotte Corporation (SIC-2812) in Geismar, Louisiana, on June 27 and 28, 1977. The company employed approximately 672 persons, 36 of whom worked with ethylene-oxide. Work operations were monitored on a routine monthly basis, including personal and area air sample collection. Air samples were analyzed using gas chromatography. A part time physician visited the company once a week and was on call the remainder of the time. A full time licensed nurse was present during the day shift, and certified first aid personnel and an ambulance were on the premises at all times. Preemployment examinations and protective equipment were required. The company produced ethylene-oxide in an entirely closed production system, took careful precautions against fire, and maintained a good ventilation system. Ethylene-oxide concentrations in all areas ranged from 0 to 1.5 parts per million (ppm), well below the OSHA 50ppm standard. The authors conclude that the workers were probably exposed to very low concentrations of ethylene-oxide in the production and use areas.
