Abstract
Worker exposure to ethylene-oxide (75218) was investigated at the Jefferson Chemical Company (SIC-2818) in Port Neches, Texas, on July 11 and 12, 1977. The company employed 750 persons. Preemployment and periodic voluntary medical examinations were provided by the company and a part time physician, two full-time nurses, an industrial hygienist, and employees trained in emergency care were on the staff. Protective equipment was required and hygienic and emergency wash facilities were provided. Work operations were periodically monitored. The area air samples collected during this survey contained less than 10 parts per million ethylene-oxide, as compared to the 50ppm OSHA standard. The authors conclude that controlled processing of ethylene-oxide does not expose workers to hazardous concentrations.
