Abstract
Environmental and medical surveys were conducted on March 27, 1978, to investigate exposure to trichloroethylene (79016) from a degreasing operation in the Fuse Subassembly Department 627 of the Westclox Division of General Time Corporation (SIC-3873), in Peru, Illinois. The investigation was requested by an authorized representative of United Steelworkers of America Union Local 12573 on behalf of 54 affected employees and was prompted by an incident in which a mechanical failure caused at least four persons to be overcome by trichloroethylene fumes. All samples analyzed were below the evaluation criteria. The author concludes that employees were not exposed to toxic concentrations of airborne contaminants. The author recommends that exposures be avoided by proper maintenance, modification and operation of existing equipment and by the education of employees and supervisors regarding the potential hazards of trichloroethylene.
