A NIOSH-sponsored nationwide survey of the occupational safety and health work force was conducted to provide information to those interested in training and development in the occupational safety and health (OSH) field, and to aid in programming and evaluation of NIOSH's manpower development activities. Survey focused on firms and organizations employing more than 100 persons within all nonagricultural Standard Industrial Classifications. Survey instruments were completed by 3300 units representing about 8% of the targeted wage and salary work force. Data were used to generate demographic profiles, characterize OSH job roles, estimate the current number of OSH employees in all sectors of the economy, and forecast future demand for OSH personnel. It was estimated that the U.S. OSH workforce is composed of approximately 84,850 employees with a bimodal age distribution, an average of 14.7 years of education for each member, and average experience of 6.8 years on the job. Data on employer specified minimum qualifications for OSH personnel indicated that: 1) 80% of new entrants will be required to have at least some college education; 2) an average of 3.9 years of experience is expected; 3) less than 13% of employers would require some form of OSH related certification; and 4) the average starting salary would be 13,50 dollars 0 per annum. Forecasts for the OSH workforce were made for 1980, 1985, and 1990 in two modes according to demand; status quo and accelerated growth. Comparison of the annual hire forecasts with the forecast supply indicated that there will be a chronic shortage of graduates in the safety and occupational nursing basic areas that may persist through the 1980's.
