Acting on a request from an authorized representative of employees regarding exposure of workers to anhydrous diethyl-ether (60297) resulting in nausea, light headedness and swelling of the inner ear, a Health Hazard Evaluation Survey was conducted by NIOSH at the laboratory and Special Analysis Room of the Pabst Brewing Company (SIC-2082), Peoria, Illinois, on October 12-14, 1976. Based upon environmental sampling, including personal and area air sampling, medical evaluation by interviews of the approximately 20 affected employees, observation of work practices, and production levels, it was concluded that exposures of employees to ethyl-ether in the areas mentioned were not toxic. Recommendations are made regarding improvement of ventilation, storage, and installation.
