Abstract
This technical report gives a listing and physical description of the processes and operations used in the plastics and resins industry and an enumeration of substances used with these processes. The technical data, which are entirely extracted from the literature, are intended to give a basic understanding of the plastics industry, the types of plastics, and toxicological hazards of plastics and associated materials. Major headings include U.S. plastics consumption, plastics progress, types of plastics and selected flowcharts, and applications. Types of plastics include thermoplastics such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (9003569) or ABS, acrylics, acetal resins, allyl, cellulosics, fluorocarbons and fluoroplastics, polycarbonates, polyolefins, polystyrene (9003536), polysulfone resins, vinyl polymers and copolymers; thermosets such as alkyd resins, amino resins, epoxy resins, furan (110009), phenolics, polyamides, polyesters, polyimide, polyurethane elastomers and silicones; synthetic rubbers; foamed plastics; block copolymers. Applications described range from adhesives, plastics in various industries, electrical and engineering applications, refrigeration, toys and games, transport, medicine and surgery.
