Abstract
The hazards stemming from the operation of mechanical power press systems are studied so that recommended design criteria may be developed and performance standards for safeguarding various types of mechanical power presses be suggested. Existing press safeguarding systems reviewed include barrier and enclosure systems, gate or movable barrier systems, two-hand trip systems, two-hand control systems, presence sensing systems, pullout systems, restraint systems, sweep systems, safe workpiece systems, safe opening systems, remote actuator systems, and zero flywheel energy systems. After each system is analyzed and its advantages and disadvantages noted, information is given which will greatly assist the press user in selecting the system which would be most desirable for his particular operating conditions. Basic design criteria are listed to help eliminate the deficiencies and improve the safeguarding performance of existing systems. New regulations aimed at increasing the safety of press operations are proposed. (Contract No. 210-75-0042)
