Abstract
The population of dividing cells in the lung is described, and the rate of cell division in these cells is found to be decreased by high concentrations of oxygen (7782447). Three test systems were developed, which permit the evaluation of experimental gases or their salts on morphology or function of: agar filled organotypic cultures of lung; flask culture of lung slices; and beating myocardial cells in culture. Abnormally high surface tension is found to result from the exposure of saline lung extracts to gases with high humidity. A vortex exchanger method is described for the extraction of gas from small amounts of blood or other biological fluids for gas chromatography.
