Abstract
NIOSH recommendations for an occupational exposure standard for noise include: applicability, definitions, occupational environment, medical examinations, work practices, warning notices, personal protective equipment, informing employees of hazards from noise, and recordkeeping. Acoustical terms are defined, with information on measurement calculations. The effects of noise on man are reviewed, including hearing loss, physical and psychological disturbances, interference with sound reception, disruption of job performance, and cumulative effect. Procedures for reducing exposures are outlined, with a discussion of the development of the standard.
