Physiological Models and Countermeasures FY11

Objective

  • Establish an understanding of the physiological "burden" imposed by personal protective ensembles
  • Perform research on countermeasures to this "burden"

Applicable Standards

  • ASTM F23.6

Key Partners

  • IPP, Inc.
  • Morning Pride

Stakeholders

  • Firefighters/emergency responders
  • Standards organizations (NFPA, ASTM)
  • Manufacturers of materials and ensembles

Project Scope

  • Conduct PPE ensemble physiologic testing in the NPPTL research physiology laboratory
  • Physiologic test of conductive & convective cooling countermeasures
  • Develop & test model of regional vs. global cooling countermeasures
  • Incorporate data from current project and Project HEROES in the development of physiologic models and countermeasures

Milestones

  • Q1 Submit subjective data manuscript to Ergonomics journal
  • Q2 Submit abstract to 2011 ICEE conference
  • Q3 Present ergonomics paper at ASTM symposia, Anaheim, CA
  • Q4 Present data at ICEE, Naftilo, Greece

Outputs

  • Manuscripts published or submitted to peer review journals (3 to date)
  • Presentations at conferences (5)
  • Proceeding papers (1)
  • Standards committee meetings & public meetings (2)

Outcomes

  • Regional cooling data used to support and develop improved ASTM F23.6 physiological test methods
  • Physiologically relevant performance criteria incorporated into NFPA and ISO standards
