Objective

To evaluate the reliability of Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) deployed in US underground coal mines.

Project Scope

Collect random sampled respirators per new protocol Feb 2009..
Test the apparatus on a breathing and metabolic simulator (100%) and on human subjects walking on a treadmill (QC) to determine life support capability and to ensure that every apparatus that passes its inspection criteria can be relied upon for emergency life support.

Problem reports to NIOSH Technology Evaluation Branch TWO CPIP currently open with CSE, one directly from LTFE.
Directives to SCSR manufacturers for corrective actions

Outcomes

Validation that equipment is performing as certified
Corrective actions by manufacturers to address reported problems
NPPTL, PRL, and MSHA developed new O2 protocol
