Objective

  • Develop new certification standards for the approval of self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus used for escape from atmospheres considered to be immediately dangerous to life and health.

Project Scope


  • Develop new basis for measuring and rating duration of use
  • Environmental challenges (heat, cold, as well as mechanical shock and vibration) to evaluate ruggedness against expected hazards
  • Evaluate practical performance and human factors
  • Periodic testing (LTFE) of field deployed apparatus
  • Voluntary registration

Milestones

  • Responded to comments on the NPRM
  • Draft Final Rule will be submitted for approval
  • Final Rule will be published in the Federal Register

Outputs

  • New certification standards for self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus used for escape
  • New STPs

Outcomes

  • Improved overall performance, reliability, and safety of this type of respirator
