Frequency of Fit Testing - FY08

Objective

  • The specific aims of this project are to:
    • Assess the rate at which respirator fit changes as a function of time for a representative sample of subjects wearing filtering-facepiece respirators (FFR); and
    • Investigate the factors that affect such change

Project Scope


  • A laboratory study will be conducted to assess causative factors affecting temporal changes in respirator fit. The possible causative factors include: weight gain or loss, face size change, 3-D scans and nose shape change, wrinkling and scarring, medical procedures, BMI, percent body fat, height, age and gender.

Milestones

  • Q1 Complete revision of the protocol per reviewer's comments
  • Q3 Obtain HSRB review and approval for the lab study protocol
  • Q4 Start data collection according to the approved lab study protocol

  • Manuscripts published or submitted to peer review journals
  • Presentations to stakeholders or conferences
  • Standards committee meetings & public meetings

Outcomes

  • Improved respiratory protection for workers as a result of assessing fit characteristic changes through testing
  • Project data is used by NIOSH, CDC, OSHA, ISO, and ANSI in guidance documents, standards, or regulations
