Current Information can be found at: Penetration of Nanoparticles through NIOSH-approved Respirator Filters - FY08

Objective

  • To evaluate the efficacy of NIOSH-approved respirators against nanoparticles
Lab testing of Filtering Face piece Respirator (F F R)

Applicable Standards

  • 42 CFR
  • ASTM E56
  • ISO TC 229

Key Partners

  • Minn. University - Nanoparticle penetration
  • NIOSH NTRC - Funded in part by NIOSH NTRC
  • DuPont Nanotech Consortium - Exchange of information

Stakeholders

  • Respirator users
  • Industrial hygienists
  • Respirator manufacturers
  • Filter media manufacturers
  • Nanotechnology companies
Document cover of Approaches to safe nanotechnology

Project Scope

  • Using flat plate system measure performance of filtering facepiece respirators against nanoparticles
  • Using manikin head form measure face seal leakage and filter performance of respirators against nanoparticles
  • Determine most penetrating particle size for N95, P100, and FFP2 filters

Milestones

  • In-house nanoparticle generation and test systems will be set up
  • Research proposal on nanoparticle penetration will be submitted for external peer review
  • Begin experimental studies per approved protocol

Outputs

  • Manuscripts published or submitted to peer review journals (approx. 1)
  • Presentations to stakeholders or conferences (approx.1)
  • Standards committee meetings & public meetings (approx.1)
  • NIOSH Best Practice Nanotech Guidance Documents

Outcomes

  • Experimental data from project is used in NIOSH, ASTM, & ISO guidelines for worker protection against aerosolized nanoparticles
  • DuPont uses NIOSH recommended test procedures for collecting data on barrier materials and filter media
