NOTE: This page is archived for historical purposes and is no longer being maintained or updated.
Current Information can be found at: Degradation and Decontamination Efficacy of Chemical Protective Clothing (CPC) - FY08

Objective

  • To develop suitable methods and procedures for decontaminating and extending the useful life of CPC
  • To develop test criteria for evaluating decontamination efficacy of CPC
  • To provide users with guidelines for reuse, retirement, and disposal of protective clothing.

Applicable Standards

  • ASTM F23.30
  • ANSI/ISEA 105-2000

Key Partners

  • ASTM: develop the standard practice using the "Permeation Calculator"
  • ISEA Hand Protection Group: update project progress
  • IPP Inc.: reviewed the proposal for the tensile property testing

Stakeholders

  • ASTM
  • ISEA and manufacturers
  • Protective clothing users

Project Scope

  • Submit draft ASTM "Standard Practice for Permeation Testing Data Analysis by Use of a Computer Program" for ballot
  • Conduct data analysis.
  • Prepare manuscript for peer-reviewed publications.

Milestones

  • Complete all the permeation testing for the 26 combinations, submit final report
  • Develop tutorial for "Permeation Calculator"
  • Distribute the software, instructions, and tutorial via the NIOSH website or on compact disc (CD) by request

Outputs

  • Manuscripts published or submitted to peer review journals (approx. 3)
  • Presentations to stakeholders or conferences (approx. 7)
  • Standards committee meetings & public meetings (approx. 4)
  • Final report on chemical resistance of the 26 combinations
  • ASTM standard practice

Outcomes

  • Based on the reusability of the 26 most commonly used material-chemical combinations, employers will be able to provide their employees with safe CPC items after effective decontamination.
  • The ASTM standard practice for permeation testing data analysis by use of the "Permeation Calculator" will create a unified and defined way for automating and standardizing permeation testing data analysis.
