Research Goal 1.8 - Develop training focused on improving HPD use

Lessons learned from the construction related studies are being applied to ship building workers in partnership with the U.S. Navy. This partnership is particularly important because the Navy can document that they have a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program in place, yet, shipyard workers suffer an extraordinarily high (greater than 12%) incidence of STS. The results of this effort may identify causes for and solutions to the STS problem that may generalize to other work sectors suffering hearing losses. Lessons learned are also being evaluated by OSHA with respect to its ANPR for a hearing conservation standard for the construction industry.
