Outputs and Transfer - Research Goal 3.3:
Reduce noise exposures to construction workers using a web-based database
for powered hand tools
Test data were used to populate the powered hand tools searchable Web site database in June, 2005. The database and the website architecture, functionality, and design were developed by HLR program staff. They also update and maintain the site. The goal is to encourage tool buyers to buy quieter tools. It may also motivate tool manufacturers to design, build, and market quieter tools.
From July to August, 2005, the power tool Web site received 633 visits.
Examples of uses of the database include:
- Distance Learning Integrators, Inc. used the database to calculate 8-hour time weighted averages of tools for its software, Odessey dB™ (http://www.odysseydb.com/).
- Drafters of the proposed ANSI S10.46 standard, Hearing Loss Prevention in Construction, used it to report noise levels of common construction tools in the draft.
A side benefit of this effort was the transfer of acoustics testing expertise to the University. Specialized acoustics lab facilities designed and equipped to accomplish sound power level testing are not common. This project provided hands on assistance in the upgrading and equipping of their facility. This effort increased opportunities for conducting noise control research and also for training noise control engineers.
