Mining Contract: Assessing the Safety Culture of Mines
This contract will train a NIOSH research team in methods specific to safety culture analysis and assist in the analysis of the safety culture at several coal mines. A positive safety culture, or a safety culture wherein employees perceive that the organization highly values safety, could lead employees to maintain or enact safety behavior prescribed by the organization. Safety culture assessments have been conducted in other industries with great success. However, there is very limited data about safety culture in coal mines. By analyzing the safety culture at underground coal mines, recommendations can be made to help mines create a positive safety culture. By doing so, some of the unique threats facing coal miners may be mitigated.
