The majority of the work in the NIOSH Office of Mining Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) is conducted at two locations, Pittsburgh, PA and Spokane, WA.
Pittsburgh Visitor Information
Directions to Pittsburgh
The NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health Research Pittsburgh location is situated in the Bruceton Research Center, a large facility in the suburbs south of downtown Pittsburgh. The site also houses offices for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (http://www.msha.gov/), the Department of Energy (http://www.doe.gov), and the NIOSH National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL).
Visitors must enter the site from the Cochrans Mill Road gate. Upon check-in at this gate, visitors will receive detailed directions to the building or person they are visiting.
Note to International Visitors: There are special security information requirements for international visitors. Please ask your contact person for the necessary forms and procedures.
Directions to the Bruceton Research Center from Pittsburgh International Airport:

- Exit the airport for Pittsburgh on Route 60 South.
- Route 60 (6.7 miles) becomes Route 22-30 (Parkway West).
- Route 22-30 (3.4 miles) becomes Route 279 (Penn Lincoln Highway).
- Exit Route 279 (5.3 miles) onto Exit 5B, labeled "Truck Route 19 South/Route 51 South, Uniontown." This is just before the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Caution: There will be traffic merging from your right at the R51 south exit. You should get into the right lane 1 to 2 miles before the exit.
- Travel 7.6 miles on Route 51 South until you reach the BlockBuster video store on your left (just before a railroad overpass).
- Immediately after the railroad overpass, turn right (South Park/Bethel Park/Yellow Belt exit onto Curry Hollow Rd).
- Follow Curry Hollow Rd. for about 1.4 miles (get into the left lane). At the bottom of a steep hill, turn left at a Y intersection with a traffic Light (there are 5 traffic lights between the South Park exit and the Y intersection).
- Travel 0.3 miles (stay in left lane) to a stop sign (avoid the right lane which does not have a stop sign and goes up the hill toward South Park). Proceed through stop sign onto Cochrans Mill Rd.
- Drive approximately 2.3 miles to a small stone sign for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Bruceton Research Center on your right. Turn right into the Center.
- Stop at the gate and get directions to the building or person you are visiting.

- From the airport, take Interstate 90 east.
- Take exit 281, and turn left (north) on S. Division Street (U.S. Highway 2)
- After 1.8 miles, turn right (east) on East Montgomery Avenue
- The research center is on the left at 315 E. Montgomery Ave. Enter the building through the center doors. A receptionist will assist you.
