The Seismic Laboratory supports field measurements and analyses of seismic event activity produced by dynamic rock mass failures in the mining workplace. Seismic data acquisition, analysis, and display systems are configured using modular hardware and software components. Wireless networks are used to collect data from surface sensor arrays. Emphasis is placed on timely delivery of raw and processed seismic information to mine personnel through the use of email and paging alerts and password protected web pages.

A second area of emphasis is in the evaluation of lightweight, portable, and rapidly deployable seismic monitoring equipment for the detection and location of faint vibrations produced by trapped underground miners.
