This group of substances are nonionic surfactants and are used as detergents, emulsifiers, wetting agents, dispersants, stabilizers, intermediates in synthesis of anionic surfactants, and defoaming agents. Nonoxynols-9 and -11 are spermicides. Nonoxynols-4, -15 and -30 are used as pharmaceutical aids (surfactants). Compounds with n < 15 are a yellow to almost colorless liquid; n > 20 are pale-yellow to off-white pastes or waxes. Compounds with n < 6 are soluble in oil; compounds with higher n are soluble in water. Health effects of exposure to the substance have not been investigated adequately.
