TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames. NO contact with strong oxidants.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!

•INHALATION Convulsions. Dizziness. Headache. Nausea. Unconsciousness. Vomiting.
Ventilation (not if powder), local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! (See Inhalation).
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
 •EYES
Safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION (See Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Sweep spilled substance into containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
Separated from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs . Cool. Dry. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.
UN Hazard Class: 6.1
UN Packing Group: II

COLOURLESS ODOURLESS SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic fumesincluding cyanidesandnitrogen oxides. Reacts with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.5 ppm as TWA; (skin); (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: IIb (not established but data is available); skin absorption (H); (DFG 2004).
OSHA PEL: TWA 3 mg/m3 (0.5 ppm) skin
NIOSH REL: TWA 3 mg/m3 (0.5 ppm) skin
NIOSH IDLH: 5 ppm See: 3333526

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system . Exposure at high concentration may result in death.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Melting point: 170°C (sublimes)
Density: 1.07 g/ml
Solubility in water: none

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S

The substance is combustible but no flash point is available in literature. Insufficient data are available on the effect of this substance on human health, therefore utmost care must be taken. Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, Emergency Response.
