Overview of the Patient Safety Component, Device-associated module (CLABSI, VAP, CAUTI)
The following NHSN slidesets and corresponding materials have been created as training aids to assist all NHSN users who want to quickly and efficiently become familiar with a general overview of NHSN and the Device-associate module (CLABSI, VAP, CAUTI). The slidesets are available for an individualized training regimen.
Summary
Overview of the Patient Safety Component: By completing this lesson, you should be able to describe NHSN and its purposes, define the authority and confidentiality protections for NHSN, identify the requirements for participating in the Patient Safety Component, describe the NHSN surveillance methodology, list the modules of the Patient Safety Component, explain key terms used in the Patient Safety Component and describe the Monthly Reporting Plan.
Central Line-associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI): By completing this lesson, you should be able to describe the scope of the problem of CLABSI, review the structure of the Device-associated Module in NHSN and the surveillance methodology used for data collection, define key terms and protocol used for collecting CLABSIs and their corresponding denominator data, describe how to collect CLABSI data using the BSI form, and describe how CLABSI rates and device utilization ratios are calculated and reported to promote performance improvement.
Ventilator-associated Pneumonia(VAP): By completing this lesson, you should be able to outline the structure, methodology and purpose of the Device-associated Module of NHSN, describe the protocols and definitions used in the VAP option within the Device-associated Module.
Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections By completing this lesson, you should be able to describe the protocols and definitions used in the CAUTI option within the Device-associated Module
Required: for all NHSN users including Facility Administrators and Group Administrators before enrolling in or using the system. Additional training requirements differ depending on the role of the NHSN user.
Audience: This training is designed for those who will collect and analyze Patient Safety Component data or enroll a hospital into NHSN. This includes: NHSN Facility Administrator, Patient Safety Primary Contact, Infection Control Professional (ICP), Epidemiologist, Microbiologist, Pharmacist, and Data entry staff
