Arboviral Diseases Branch

What is the Mission of the Arboviral Diseases Branch?

  • Conduct surveillance, field investigations and laboratory studies of vector-borne viral agents and their arthropod vectors.
  • Define disease etiology, ecology and pathogenesis in order to develop methods and strategies for disease diagnosis, surveillance, prevention and control.
  • Provide diagnostic reference consultation, epidemic aid and epidemiologic consultation to State and local health departments, other components of CDC, other Federal agencies, and national and international health organizations.
  • Provide technical expertise and assistance in professional training activities to national and international health workers and scientists.
  • Function as a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Arboviruses.

Surveillance and Epidemiology Activity

  • Provide consultation, training, and epidemic aid for arbovirus diseases.
  • Maintain surveillance for domestic and international arboviral diseases.
  • Conduct research on the epidemiology of arboviral diseases.
  • Provide medical and epidemiology assistance in developing and evaluating approaches to prevention and control for reducing incidence of arboviral infections.
  • Serve the epidemiology and clinical consultative functions of the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Arboviruses.

Diagnostics and Reference Activity

  • Provide diagnostic laboratory training and reference diagnostic services to local, state and international health laboratories.
  • Conduct research and development on rapid laboratory diagnostic procedures.
  • Provide authoritative advice and consultation on arboviruses and their taxonomic relationships;
  • Maintain reference collections of arboviral agents and immune sera. Serve the diagnostic and reference functions of the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Arboviruses.

Ecology and Entomology Activity

  • Provide consultation, training, field services, laboratory services, and emergency response aid for arboviral diseases in disciplines of entomology, vector control, and vertebrate ecology.
  • Conduct research on the transmission and maintenance cycles of arboviruses as a basis for prevention and control.
  • Provide assistance in developing and evaluating approaches to prevention and control for reducing incidence of arboviral infections.
  • Serve the entomology and ecology consultative functions of the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Arboviruses.

Virology Activity

  • Provide consultation, training and laboratory support for the biochemical and immunochemical analysis of vector-borne viruses.
  • Investigate the molecular epidemiology of arboviral diseases.
  • Conduct research on the immunology, molecular biology, and genetic aspects of viruses and their hosts and vectors.
  • Seek novel control strategies for viruses using molecular and genetic approaches in the development of vaccines and therapeutics.
  • Serve the molecular virology and immunology consultative functions of the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Arboviruses.

Public Health Management Activity

  • Provide operational assistance and logistical support to the scientific staff enabling them to accomplish the scientific and public health mission of the Branch.
  • Provide administrative and managerial service and support.
  • Develop administrative controls that follow agency rules and regulations to monitor and prevent misuse of appropriated resources.
  • Provide expert advice on policy and procedures for personnel, travel, training, procurement and budget.
  • Facilitate logistics for the Branch, including technology transfer with outside collaborators.
  • Assist scientific staff in implementing complex projects with public health partners through cooperative agreements or contractual mechanisms.
