Summary of Project
The purpose of this project called the Assessment Initiative Program, Focus Area B, Community Health Assessment Practices is to: 1) improve the processes and outcomes of community health assessment activities; 2) develop tools and methods to complete community health assessments appropriate for use in all populations and subgroups within Arkansas; 3) test, implement, and evaluate those tools and methods; 4) identify and secure resources to sustain improved community health assessment activities; and 5) disseminate community health assessment tools and methods to other state and local health departments who may benefit from the work. Assisting in the completion of these activities from within the department of health and from outside, including academic and community partners.

The applicant expects to increase the quantity and improve the quality and comprehensiveness of community health data that can inform program development and health policy decisions. Their hope is that the tools and strategies will also be of benefit to other states and communities who are similarly working to obtain community-level health data in communities with significant population diversity and hard-to-reach populations, specifically the Latino, Marshallese, and Hmong populations. The hope that the ability to assess the health of hard to reach subgroups will augment the consistent assessment of majority populations groups in order to generate a more comprehensive and informative system of community health assessment.
