Rhode Island is focusing on data dissemination for the Rhode Island Assessment Initiative grant. Rhode Island is instituting an interactive Internet-based query system that will allow users to get the information they want quickly and efficiently.
During the first year of the project, Rhode Island held focus sessions with stakeholders, partners, and data users to assess interactive Internet-query systems for health data. These sessions allowed project staff to clearly delineate the technical specifications for an interactive web-query system. In October 2003, an Internet-query system was selected, and work began to complete the Rhode Island-Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (RI-BRFSS) data for the system.
In addition, during the first year, Rhode Island completed a comprehensive review of the RI-BRFSS using CDC's Updated Guidelines for Evaluating Public Health Surveillance Systems: Recommendations from the Guidelines Working Group and completed a survey of RI-BRFSS data users. This work will result in a report on the current needs of RI-BRFSS users as well as recommendations for improving RI-BRFSS.
After the Internet-based interactive query system is operational, the project will incrementally expand access to other databases in phases, beginning with those required for monitoring Rhode Island's Year 2010 health indicators (e.g., the Youth Risk Behavior Survey), then to other databases that reside in the Rhode Island Department of Health, and lastly to databases that reside with external partners (e.g., claims-based databases). Each of these databases will be subjected to the same process as was the RI-BRFSS before being added to the Internet-based query system. The product of years 2-4 will be a user-friendly query-based data system that enables users to access data that meets their needs for health assessment and program and policy development.
