During the first Assessment Initiative grant cycle the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) developed 23 subject-oriented community profiles containing 192 health status indicators; a profile is county specific for a particular topic (e.g., chronic diseases, women's health, or prenatal health). Each profile contains 15-30 indicators that pertain to that topic. The Profiles contain the number of data years, number of events, rates, statistical significance, quintile ranking, and the state rate. Each indicator is then linked to a resource page that provides a definition for the indicator, risk factors for the condition, condition description, intervention strategies to either prevent the condition or improve the outcome, state and community resources and programs, published reports, and other related web sites for that condition, including a link to the national Healthy People 2010 Objectives.

In addition Missouri developed an interactive Internet-based application, Missouri Information for Community Assessment (MICA). MICAs have been created for 15 different data files. By accessing MICA, a person can follow simple steps to create a table indicating frequencies and rates for different health conditions and demographic factors or indicate the data as a map.

The goals of the current project include

  • Keeping the community profiles and MICAs updated with current data;
  • Developing training and documentation for MICAs and community profiles;
  • Creating seven new community profiles and 10 new MICAs;
  • Creating new graphics functionality in community profiles and MICAs;
  • Expanding geographic data availability; and
  • Exporting MICA to six new states.
