1990 Case Definition

The 1990 case definition appearing on this page was re-published in the 1997 MMWR Recommendations and Reports titled Case Definitions for Infectious Conditions Under Public Health Surveillance [MMWR 1997;46(RR10)] (available at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00047449.htm). Thus, the 1990 and 1997 versions of the case definition are identical.

Clinical description

An infection that may result in diarrheal illness of variable severity

Laboratory criteria for diagnosis

Case classification

Probable: a clinically compatible case that is epidemiologically linked to a confirmed case

Confirmed: a case that is laboratory confirmed

Comment

Only confirmed cases are reported to the laboratory-based surveillance system managed by the Foodborne and Diarrheal Diseases Branch, Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases, National Center for Infectious Diseases, CDC.
