Cases of eastern equine encephalitis among humans, often associated with high
mortality rates (i. e., >20%) and severe neurologic sequelae, occur
sporadically in the eastern United States. During 1998, four cases were reported
from four states. During 1964 –1998, a median of 4 cases (average: 5) were
reported each year in the United States.
