California serogroup viruses (mainly LaCrosse virus in the eastern United
States) are an endemic cause of encephalitis, especially among children. In
1998, a total of 97 cases were reported from 11 states. During 1964–1998, a
median of 65 cases (average: 74) were reported each year in the United States.
