Psittacosis - by year, United States, 1966-1996

The number of psittacosis cases may vary considerably from year to year because of periodic outbreaks. The apparent increase in cases during the late 1970s to mid-1980s may reflect greater application of diagnostic tests for Chlamydia sp. in patients with respiratory illness. The lower number of case in recent years may reflect improved diagnostic testing for distinguishing C. psittaci from C. pneumoniae infections.
