Overview

Mount Sinai Injury Control Research Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City is the newest CDC Injury Control Research Center. They will conduct research on persons with traumatic brain injury to better understand the consequences of their injury and needs and to enhance the quality of their lives.   Four research studies will be implemented: (1) A randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be implemented to document the impact of sustained aerobic exercise on the cognitive functioning and mood of individuals with TBI, both those with “mild” as well as moderate to severe injuries; (2) A second RCT will evaluate the impact of an intensive, short-term cognitive program focused on improving executive functions and attention of participants with TBI, with long-term impact on their functioning in the community and on perceived quality of life; (3) The Brain Injury Screening Questionnaire will be validated by demonstrating its utility in identifying sensitive and specific patterns of post-TBI symptomatology that is distinguishable from patterns of dysfunction found in persons with other chronic conditions; and (4) The I-CAN, a new method for identifying perceived needs of individuals with TBI, will be evaluated to provide the basis for documenting service-related and other needs over time and for providing systematic input to agencies.
