Program Highlights

Technical assistance provided by the state:

  • Prepared a study on drowning deaths in children at the request of the NC Child Fatality Task Force.
  • Conducted seminars for public and private audiences on how to use the comprehensive injury surveillance mortality data books (1989-1998) and hospital discharge data (1997-1999) to public and private audiences.

Injury activities initiated within the state:

  • Conducted an investigation about poisoning-related mortality from 1990-2001.
  • Conducted an investigation about deaths from unintentional drug overdoses, 1997-2001.
  • Established a task force to address deaths from unintentional drug overdoses.
  • Testing the pilot version of a death reporting system for violent deaths in women and youth/adolescent suicides.
  • Developing a broad, incident-based, relational public health surveillance system to support state counter-bioterrorism initiatives.

Evaluation activities within state:

  • Developed a quality assurance protocol, which includes process evaluation, for the North Carolina Emergency Department Database.
