* The descriptions of code categories are general and do not include subcategories and exclusions unless noted.  For detailed descriptions of code categories, see  the ICD-9 manual.  E-codes are ICD-9 external cause of injury codes, so they are preceded by an "E."  For traumatic brain injury (TBI) deaths, diagnosis codes had to be accompanied by an E-code as an underlying cause of death.

5.2  Other Data Elements

Colors: Injury Maps uses color schemes to shade the maps.  The choices for colors affect how the shading will appear.  In the default color scheme, red equals the 90th percentile and greater; blue equals the 75-89th percentiles; and white equals the lowest percentile.    Two other three-color options are green and grayscale.  The green option features green equaling the 90th percentile and greater, blue equaling the 75-89th percentiles, and white equaling the lowest percentiles.  The grayscale option features dark gray equaling the 90th percentile and greater, light gray equaling the 75-89th percentiles, and white equaling the lowest percentiles.

Injury Maps also offers one four-color option that maps rates by quartiles. In this color scheme, red equals the 75th percentile and greater; blue equals the 50-74th percentile; gray equals the 25-49th percentile; and white equals the lowest percentiles.

The table below summarizes the meaning of the color schemes:

Default

Green

Grayscale

Four Colors

Color Percentile Color Percentile Color Percentile Color Percentile
red > 90  green > 90 dark gray > 90  red > 75
blue 75-89 light green 75-89 light gray 75-89 blue 50-74
white < 89 white < 89 white < 89 gray 25-49
            white < 25

Excess Deaths: For state maps, Injury Maps displays an estimate of the excess deaths per year for each cause of injury. NCIPC obtained these estimates by multiplying the excess death rate by the state’s average annual population. Excess death rates were calculated by subtracting the national rate from the rate within the state. Consequently, a state’s excess deaths per year for a given type of injury is the number of additional deaths each year in the state because of the state’s mortality rate being higher than the national rate.

Mortality Rate: The number of people in a given population who have died during a period of time from a specific cause.  Injury Maps' mortality rates are expressed in deaths per 100,000.

Period of Interest: The years for which injury death rate data is available for mapping.
