Activities Proposed for FY 05

Antimicrobial Resistance, Food Safety, Hepatitis Prevention and Control, Influenza Surveillance and Response, National Electronic Disease Surveillance System, West Nile Virus, and General Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity


Key Performance Indicators

Antimicrobial Resistance
  • Selected candidates attend the national "Get Smart" meeting.
Food Safety
  • An increase in submission of appropriate enteric pathogen isolates from sentinel laboratories.
  • Rapid dissemination of relevant outbreak information on the Iowa-LRN.
  • UHL will meet the CDC guideline of five to seven days turn-around time for Salmonella postings on PulseNet.
Hepatitis Prevention and Control
  • Recommendations for hepatitis planning in Iowa will be compared to recommendations in the national hepatitis C strategy to ensure major components were addressed in the Iowa plan.
Influenza Surveillance and Response
  • Coordination with other state agencies, development of materials, provision of service and training, conduction of meetings; designs and directs the gathering, tabulation of interpreting required data, and submission of reports/documentation to CDC to ensure proper functionality.
National Electronic Disease Surveillance System
  • Accuracy of disease surveillance statistics.
West Nile Virus
  • Participation by all counties in the submission of the correct species of birds in the WNV surveillance program.
  • Testing mosquitoes, chickens, and human specimens for arboviral infection.
  • Education of health care providers and the general public on issues regarding arboviral disease causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
General Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity
  • Present at least one emerging disease educational session statewide using the ICN.
