![]() Coyotes
The coyote is one of the best runners in the canine family. They can run up to 40 miles per hour and can jump as high as 14 feet. Coyotes usually weigh between 20 and 40 pounds.Diet: Rabbits, mice, squirrels, birds, insects, fruit Habitat: Open plains of the West and brush areas of the East. They can be found throughout most of the United States.
In 2001 in the United States, 7 coyotes tested positive for rabies. Signs of rabies in coyotes include having no fear of humans, acting aggressively, or acting listless. It is important to know that any coyote anywhere can have the disease, not just those in the states that found rabies in coyotes in 2001. Always be careful of any coyote you see behaving strangely. As with all wild animals, you should never touch or approach a coyote. If you see a coyote acting strangely, have an adult call your local animal control officer for assistance. | Home | Fast Facts | The Virus | Animals | CDC's Rabies Web Page
