Collaborative Research Opportunities

The WHOCC-Plague maintains an active research program involving individuals at the center and collaborators from many other laboratories and plague programs in the United States and other countries.

The center is especially interested in research intended to:

  • Develop improved animal-based surveillance systems that will more effectively identify threatening epizootic activity.
  • Better characterize risk factors for persons living in plague-endemic regions of the United States and other countries.
  • Use geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing technologies to better identify areas and conditions associated with increased human plague risk.
  • Use mathematical modeling to improve our understanding of spatiotemporal variations in human plague risks and epizootic activity.
  • Improve our understanding of the ecology and maintenance of plague in different natural foci.
  • Develop improved techniques for the rapid and reliable diagnosis of plague.
  • Develop improved techniques for molecular epidemiology investigations of Y. pestis.
  • Improve screening techniques for antimicrobial resistance.
  • Develop improved methods for flea control; and Develop improved health education strategies.
  • Develop international network for monitoring Yersinia pestis strains.
  • Improve understanding of pathogenic mechanisms of Y. pestis.

Publications resulting from collaborative research activities of the WHOCC-Plague (1990-2000) are listed in the Publications section of this website (click to go to Publications).
