Laboratory testing showed that all of these 57 patients had thrombocytopenia—again, this is part of the case definition.

  • Increased capillary permeability was documented in three ways (in addition to documenting effusions):
    • 60% had hemoconcentration, defined as 20% or greater change in hematocrit.
    • 35% had hypoproteinemia.
    • 67% had hypoalbuminemia.

In addition, there is commonly liver involvement in DHF, with elevated AST and ALT levels. Less often, there may be an elevated bilirubin.

  • Both the PT and PTT may be elevated; the PTT is more frequently—and usually more severely—elevated than the PT.
