Proactive Surveillance in Puerto Rico

Organization and Functions:

  • Blood samples obtained by private physicians, health centers, public and private hospitals
  • Samples transported by staff from Health Department and private laboratories
  • Samples tested at the CDC Dengue Branch
  • Results provided to submitting source and Health Department vector control staff
  • Analyses disseminated via Dengue Surveillance Summary
The dengue surveillance system in Puerto Rico provides an example of a laboratory-based system in which blood samples are obtained by physicians, health centers, private and public hospitals, and private laboratories. The samples are transported by staff members from the Puerto Rico Health Department and private laboratories. The samples are then tested at the Dengue Branch by CDC and Health Department staff. The results are provided to the submitting source and to Health Department vector control staff. Data analyses are disseminated to various groups and individuals through press releases, articles in newspapers, and scientific journals (including the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report).
