Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
The CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) Tanzania office was launched in February
2001. Since then, CDC has worked with the Tanzania Ministry of Health to support
outreach activities targeting most at-risk populations, prevention of
mother-to-child HIV transmission, development of National Blood Transfusion
Services and guidelines on appropriate use of blood products, technical
assistance for integration of HIV and tuberculosis (TB) services, and voluntary
counseling and testing.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan
for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Tanzania was designated a focus country of the
initiative and the CDC GAP Tanzania became a part of this unified US Government
effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
